When most people think about visiting Italy their focus is typically on the boot of the country like Rome, Florence and Naples. Usually, Milan is ignored. In fact, during my research for our big Europe trip I read over and over again from other travellers to skip Milan all together. I am so glad we did not listen to them because Milan has a lot to offer!

Read on for the 6 things to do in Milan that you won’t regret!

1. Enjoy Some of the Most Delicious Food

It’s no surprise that Italy is known for having some of the best food in the world. Of course, that includes Milan. More specifically, Milan has a few specialities such as risotto and polenta that are must-haves for anyone visiting the city. They also have a great “aperitivo” which is similar to “happy hour” in the US where you can pop into the local restaurants and cafes and enjoy a discounted drink and some unlimited appetizer foods. It’s a GREAT deal.

I can’t talk about food in Milan without mentioning the most incredible meal I’ve ever had in my life. I will never stop talking about and dreaming of the deliciously cheesy risotto that we had at Osteria Conchetta in Milan. They made it right next to us in a giant cheese wheel, does like get better than that? This alone is enough of a reason to visit Milan for me now.

2. Have a Surprisingly Cool Starbucks Experience

I know, I know, how can I be talking about visiting a Starbucks in Milan where coffee was basically invented? Well, in 2018 Starbucks opened up a Starbucks Reserve steps away from the Duomo di Milano and it is worth a visit. The shop double as a roastery and offers unique experiences and menu items such as an affogato station or special coffee making displays.

On top of all of that, both the interior and exterior of this Starbucks are designed well and tribute to traditional Italian styles, so even if you’re not interested in a coffee or pastry it’s worth walking around for a few minutes.

3. Visiting the Duomo di Milano

The Duomo di Milano is the massive cathedral sitting in the city centre dating from 1386. This cathedral is not only beautiful on the inside and outside, but it’s seeping in history. Inside visitors can see the statue of Batholomew the Apostle, the skeletons of various saints and even one of the nails supposedly used during the Crucifxion of Christ. You can also visit the rooftop terrace (either by stairs or a lift) which is a beautiful walk along the top of the cathedral and offers some amazing views of the city. I would book this ahead of time online to avoid waiting in long lines the day of your visit.

Tip: Make sure you’re wearing something that covers your shoulders! Otherwise you’ll be forced to buy a paper dress from the gift shop for €2.50 like me. Don’t be like me!

4. Take a Day Trip

Milan is the perfect city to take a day trip from with places like Lake Como, Verona and The Franciacorta region nearby. We ended up taking a day trip to Verona which was only an hour away by train. You can read more about our time in Verona, Italy here.

5. Shop at the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

If you have money to blow, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is the place to go. This shopping arcade from the nineteenth century is home to luxurious brands such as Prada, Gucci, Versace, and more. Don’t worry, if you’re not rolling in the money there are also affordable cafes to grab a drink or meal!

6. Visit The Last Supper painting at the Santa Maria delle Grazie Church

Milan is home to one of the most famous paintings in history The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci which is housed in the Santa Maria delle Grazie Church. The catch is that tickets to see the painting are extremely hard to secure since only 1300 people per day are able to visit. Tickets go on sale approximately 2-3 months ahead of time and usually sell out that day so keep an eye on their website to grab yours!
