Czech-ing Out Prague
Prague wasn’t even on my radar as a travel destination until recently and I’m so glad it came across my path. This capital of the Czech Republic has quickly become one of my favorite cities I’ve visited yet and we were lucky enough to get to travel there just before Christmas when they still had their famous Christmas Markets in the town square.
Czech out our 4-day itinerary of this historic and beautiful city!
Day 1.
We arrived into the city around 4pm, just in time for dinner and some quick exploring! We couldn’t resist a visit to the Christmas Markets in the town square but for dinner we avoided that touristy area of the city and had dinner at U Novaka. I highly suggest getting outside of the tourist areas for food! We had goulash with bread dumplings, a chicken dish with fried potatoes and 5 beers which only cost us $30 total!
Day 2:
For our first full-day in the city we decided to walk the royal route which consists of a visit to: the Old Town Square, the Astronomical Clock, the Church of Our Lady Before Tyn, the Charles Bridge, the Lesser Town Square, the Church of St. Nicholas, Prague Castle, St. Vitus Cathedral, Golden Lane and The Black Tower.
Unfortunately, the draw of the Christmas Markets brings the crowds so the Old Town Square area was extremely crowded. The Charles Bridge was also crowded but we were lucky enough to get some privacy overlooking the bridge on the tower closer to Lesser Town because most people climb the tower closer to Old Town.
We explored the castle grounds which holds not only the castle but also St. Vitus Cathedral, Golden Lane and the Black Tower. There were also some bonus Christmas markets inside the gates where we were able to grab a quick snack.
On our way back across the bridge we made a pitstop at the John Lennon Wall which is a wall filled with John Lennon and Beatles inspired graffiti.
Day 3:
For our second full-day we decided to head to a lesser known area in Prague called Vysehrad which is a fort on the right bank of the Vitava River. The fort offers great views of the city and also is home to a beautiful cathedral.
Afterwards, we went back towards the city centre to grab a beer flight at the Prague Beer Museum. We ordered a flight of 10 beers but the Prague Beer Museum has 30 Czech beers on tap to choose from!
We ended the day with a trip to see the sunset at the Petřín Lookout Tower which is a 63.5 meter-tall tower that overlooks the city. The tower definitely offered up some amazing views of the city but it was extremely crowded. On the way home, we stopped at the nearby Strahov Monastic Brewery which serves up some “monk” beer.
Day 4:
Our flight out of Prague wasn’t until 8pm so we had plenty of time to continue exploring before we needed to get to the airport. We decided to take the trip to the top of the Astronomical Clock Tower overlooking the Old Town Square to get a better look at the city and the Christmas Markets.
After we did a little shopping at the markets, we went over to U Fleku for a late lunch where we tried some Bramboráčky (potato pancakes), Svíčková (braised beef in a vegetable cream sauce served with bread dumplings, cranberry sauce and unsweetened whipped cream), and Klobása (roasted sausage).
There were definitely a few things we didn’t do that we could have fit in like the Jewish Quarters, the National Museum of Prague and a Prague food tour! I also wish we could have taken a day trip out of the city to visit other parts of the Czech Republic but we decided to take our time and relax on this trip. We’ll just have to take another trip ASAP.
