5 Things to do on a Weekend Trip to Belfast
I can’t believe it’s taken us almost 7 months of living in Ireland to finally get to Belfast! We decided to book a last-minute weekend getaway to the birthplace of the titanic and I am so happy that we did!
Here are the top 5 things we did during our weekend getaway!
Titanic Museum
We took the first train out of Dublin so that we could make the most of the day exploring. We immediately made our way off the train and to the Titanic Museum. The Titanic was constructed and launched from Belfast so the museum celebrates their history while also taking educating visitors about the aftermath of the sinking. For anyone who is interested in history or ships then this museum is great for you. Otherwise, it could come off as a little boring.
Also, make sure to pay the extra money for the audio guide! We did not and we felt like we missed a lot because of it.
Belfast City Hall
It might sound odd to suggest a visit to the city’s town hall BUT their city hall is absolutely beautiful. It’s a great area to take a break or to explore the many monuments on the grounds. It’s also home to the Titanic Memorial Gardens. At night, they light up the building in different colours so make sure to walk by and check it out!
Crumlin Road Gaol
Since I’ve moved to Ireland I’ve found that I apparently love to visit jails? Who knew. Crumlin Road Gaol is the third jail I’ve visited in Ireland and a great place to take a tour to learn about the history of Northern Ireland. You’ll also get to explore a secret tunnel that connects the jail to the old courthouse across the street and some secret rooms.
Belfast Murals
There are murals all over the city of Belfast. We took an hour or so to explore some of the international peace wall murals. We opted out of taking one of Belfast’s famous Black Taxi Tours but this would be a great way to see more of the murals around the city.
Go to the Pubs
Belfast has some great pubs to relax and enjoy a pint in. We started of with The Duke of York which had some cool decorations and twinkling lights throughout the pub before we moved to The Harp around the corner which had some great live music playing! After squeezing in some delicious burgers for dinner, we moved on to The Crown Liquor Saloon which is an old bar that still has their original Victorian architecture. We finished off the night across the street at the Europa Hotel Bar which is most famous for being the most bombed hotel in Europe since the hotel was bombed 33 times by the IRA bombs during “The Troubles.”
Bonus! If you’re not into beer then visit Maggie May’s for some of the best milkshakes you’ll ever have!
There is still so much to do in Belfast that we didn’t get to this trip. I can’t wait to go back to Belfast (hopefully soon!) to explore the castle and some of the mountain area.
